2012 election map precarious for Senate Dems

Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., who announced on Tuesday he would not run for re-election in 2012, speaks at a campaign rally for Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., on Oct. 13, 2010. Pomeroy, partially blocked at far right, lost in November to Republican Rick Berg, and Democratic U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan, left, did not seek re-election and left the Senate this month.North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad's retirement plans underscore a big problem for Democrats in 2012 and beyond. Farm Belt and Southern voters who prefer a Republican president but have often backed moderate Democrats for Congress seem increasingly inclined to vote GOP in all federal races.
